US Military to Test Internet Router in Space


The Department of Defense is working on an Internet Routing In Space (IRIS) initiative, which plans to deliver military communications through a satellite-based router. This will eventually benefit civilian communications as well, allowing packets to be routed via satellite the same way that TV and phone signals are routed now.

    Seriously, though, what with syn-ack, 3-way handshake, et al… what gamer/broadband user is gonna want satellite-induced lag? And when the Chinese inadvertantly “test” another anti-sat laser during your WoW clan’s latest mission?

    Lacking any astro-physics street-cred (beyond having read hard SF), I wrote a paper describing routers placed above (and below) the solar ecliptic for a solar sytem-wide internet, only slightly facetiously called InterPLANet.
