As Chip and I discussed, this kind of decision illustrates why, with film options on many, many relatively new, deserving novels in place, so few ever actually get developed. Scott’s direction was flawless, and Giger’s organic designs were inspired. One of the chief strengths of ALIEN was the lurk and jerk, rarely visible nature of the creature. Since remakes of genre films are almost *always* about CGI, expect the monster to be in-your-face for the majority of the film. Bleah. Scott (and Cameron, for that matter) should be outraged. The AvP films have already chipped away at the ALIEN franchise’s legacy. This will probably destroy what dignity it still retained. Before long we’ll probably hear that they’re remaking SW ep. IV.
I can think of one good reason…
A.E. van Vogt’s widow will^H^H^H^Hmight be remunerated once again for the original.
A.E., at Harlan E’s urging, sought and received payment for some of the ideas lifted from Black Destroyer.
It’s not a remake. It’s a prequel.
Thanks, Rick. Prequels are still generally parasites upon their originals, but they’re marginally less tacky.
I also just read the post referenced by Chip and, though it does claim that it will be a re-make, it also stresses the fact that it’s a rumor. They do claim that Costigan and both Scotts are on-board, as well. If Ridley is down with this, I’d be surprised if it’s actually a remake.
