It’s No Coincidence that George Orwell was British

Criminal profilers working for the London Metropolitan Police’s Precrime…I mean, Homicide Prevention Unit are putting together a list of 100 future murderers. They’re not simply keeping a list of violent criminals who are now at large. The project seeks to identify individuals who will, in the future commit serious crimes.

Instead of Philip K. Dicksian Precogs, the Unit is using a database of statements from former partners, information from mental health workers and details of past complaints to create psychological profiles of likely offenders. They’re trying to identify the 100 men most likely to commit murder in the near future.

Here’s the money quote for me:

Once an individual has been identified, police would decide whether to begin arrest proceedings, or alert social services who could steer targeted individuals into “management programs.”

So…now you can be arrested because a computer program says you might be violent in the future? Not even Big Brother went that far.
