It’s a Cat! It’s a Flashlight!

Glowing CatsIn the “headlines that sound like a joke” department: South Koreans Clone Cats That Glow in the Dark

I think the first paragraph in this article is incorrect, since it says that the researchers “have cloned cats by manipulating a fluorescent protein gene;” I expect what the reporter meant is that they’ve cloned cats which happen to have the manipulated gene. (If all you needed for cloning was manipulating a fluorescent gene, we’d be hip-deep in jellyfish.)

Anyway, this is significant because they’ve monkeyed with a mammal’s genes and then cloned it. This holds great promise for eventually “fixing” all kinds of genetic diseases.

I can see a side market for pets you can find during a power outage, too.

  1. However, in order to restore cosmic balance, those little Halloween light sticks will no longer glow when you bend them, though they will say “meow.”

This is great news for the Schroedinger’s breed though, whose indeterminate existence might (or might not) be brightened by the addition of reading materials to the box.
