The geological inconsistencies in what were considered possible ancient Martian “shorelines” has been cleared up by a simple (although, to my mind, rather chilling) answer: At some point in the past Mars toppled over 50 degrees, deforming the edges of the ancient oceans. So it looks like there’s finally very good evidence that Mars had very large oceans in the distant past.
