Steampunk Roundup
I’m a big fan of steampunk, due to a gothy fascination with Victorian culture and “retro-futurism.” I love the vibe of mass-produced mixed with one-off craftsmanship in the alternate-history technology that’s such a hallmark of the genre. If you’re a fan, here are some links you might enjoy.
The Steampunk Home – This blog is devoted to home décor that combines “the scientific romanticism of the Victorians with our real present and imagined future.”
Aether Emporium – This is a marvelous resource, which “aims to provide a onestop resource and archive for all things Steampunk.”
The Steampunk Workshop – Lots of resources here, including projects, links, and lots of photographs.
Steampunk Pics – A photoblog which features both images of actual steampunk items (such as “ray guns”) and real vintage photos with a steampunk feel (like Zeppelins floating over cities).
Antipodean Steampunk Adventures – “Follow the adventures of the maduncle as he endeavours to make contact with the rest of the steampunk universe from the outer colonies.”
Datamancer – Their subhead is “Prestidigital Datamancery & Paraphrenalic Technofetishism,” and just try saying that three times fast. They feature a lot of technical art and gear.
Steam Gear Lab – The “two mad geniuses” who run the site produce props and makeup effects, but are also purveyors of “steampunk haberdashery, mad science accoutrements, science guns and wonders of all kinds.”
Steampunk Bitz – A general steampunk blog.
There are at least two LiveJournal communities devoted to steampunk clothing, Steamfashion and Steamy Stitches. There’s also a Flickr group, and Divine Caroline recently featured a collection of steampunk clothing.
Threadbanger did a Week of Steampunk feature, providing directions for making several accessories.
Brass Goggles – “A blog and forum devoted to the lighter side of all things Steampunk.”
Steampunk Magazine – A rather nice Webzine.
Writer Richard Morgan (not Broken Angels Richard Morgan, some other Richard Morgan) was commissioned by the New York Times to write a piece on steampunk culture, which was then cut for reasons unknown. He’s posted the article online, and it has some lovely ideas for adding steampunk elements to the home. (Incidentally, the Times eventually ran its own piece on steampunk, which includes some interesting links.)
Offbeat Bride has a feature on a steampunk-themed wedding, complete with clockwork cakes.
Game company Three Rings Design commissioned Because We Can to convert some open office space into an environment modeled on Captain Nemo’s Victorian submarine.
For those in California, there’s even a Steampunk Convention.
:::whew::: That’s a lot of steam-powered contraptions for your perusal. Have I missed any of your favorite sites?

You did forget one other very good steampunk site, and it has been there pretty much from the beginning of steampunk, http://www.girlgenius.com one of the best webcomics out there and it has been steampunk all the way by Phil and Kaja Foglio. A very good read.
