August 23rd, Friday

A note to people looking for intellectual convention reports -- this is more of a diary of a 2 week vacation with friends that included Con Jose 2002. Read at your own peril.

GAND & JD'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURES

The airport in Ontario, California is quite small, compared to LAX or JFK or ORD. But knowing JD, I still sent him instructions on how he could find me -- get off plane, go down escalator, get luggage, do an about-face, walk out glass doors, stand at the street, look for white van with an orange Tigger flying on the antennae. Simple, right? Ontario also has the usual circle road that passes in front of the airport and goes around the parking lot. So I'm slowly driving round and round, being waved at by the security people. I'm on my 20th circle and still no JD. Did he miss his connection in Texas? Did he change so much in the past year I don't recognize him? Now I'm on my 25th circle. Where in the hell is he? As I drive around the outside of the parking lot, I happen to glance down between the rows of cars. JD!!! Walking in 100°+ sun, dragging his suitcase through the parking lot! So I pull over in the red zone (we're a quarter mile from the security guards), we do a passionate grope in the middle of the street, throw the luggage in the van and head off to Marie Callendar's, where I introduce him to the wonders of half-gallon size Margaritas and Razzleberry pie.

When we got to my house a few hours later, I introduced him to DC, who immediately knew that JD was allergic to cats. So of course she wanted to crawl all over him. While we playing on the computer, I looked out the window and said, "Cool - your surprise is here, JD." I led him out the garage door, where a woman was waiting. She gave me a hug, turned to JD and gave him a hug. I'm laughing. JD's thinking that I have really friendly neighbors. The woman looks at JD, grins, and says, "WOOF!" Recognition comes to JD - it's SciFiDog, who just drove over 3 hours in LA traffic to meet JD.

After dinner, they plugged in Sci's laptop and proceeded to raise hell in the chat room, while I tried to host from my computer room. I will never, ever EVER try that again. They sounded like they were having WAY too much fun. I think we finally got to our respective beds at about midnight - which means it was 3 AM for JD :)
