Date: November 2007
Issue No. 45
The story probably began with gatherings around a fire with hunters boasting about the horrible beasts they killed on a day's hunt. From the spoken word to the written word, from cave drawings to theatres, from printed books to electronic readers the story has come a long, long way. Who can deny the influence of fiction? And in that context, who can deny the power of science fiction, since science fiction will take the story a lot farther, beyond today's imagination, beyond the boundaries of Earth, to whatever worlds there are to discover, wonderful and terrible, to plant the story in alien soil?

Hook in the Book
It's hard to stay cordial while fighting for your life, even when your life doesn't amount to much.
Even when you're just a lump of clay.
Some kind of missile -- a stone I guess -- smacked the brick wall inches away, splattering my face with stinging grit. There wasn't any shelter to cower behind, except an overstuffed trash can. I grabbed the lid and swung it around.
Just in time. Another slug walloped the lid, denting plastic instead of my chest.
Someone had me nailed.
