Date: October 2007
Issue No. 44

Precursor

The "holiday" season is upon us! Biggie this month--Halloween! Granted it occurs the last day of the month, but we all have fun getting ready for it. Do we have anough "trick or treaters" in the neighborhood to warrant stocking up on bags of small pieces of candy? Should we just indulge in bags of candy, anyway? Are we going to hang ghosts and skeletons from the trees? Or turn off all the lights and stay in the back of the house on October 31st. Are we going to listen to War of the Worlds, again, this year? Should we carve the pumpkin, or paint it?
It's one of the most enjoyable holidays of the year. Celebrating the harvest, recognizing the onset of the coldest part of the year... Being "afraid". The lead up is as much fun as the event. Halloween, for me, is like reading a good book. Opening the pages (decorating, buying the treats...), diving into the chapters (trick or treating, or opening the door for those who do...), and savoring the finale (treats that are left after the event).

Dawn spacecraft begins mission of exploration

BY JUSTIN RAY
SPACEFLIGHT NOW
Posted: September 27, 2007

Seeking to explore the uncharted worlds of Vesta and Ceres in the heart of the asteroid belt, NASA's Dawn space probe rocketed off planet Earth at sunrise Thursday to begin the three-billion-mile adventure that is counting on the craft's exotic ion engines to drive the eight-year trek.

Mars rovers survive storms, ready for next objectives

NASA/JPL STATUS REPORT
Posted: September 9, 2007

"These rovers are tough. They faced dusty winds, power starvation and other challenges -- and survived. Now they are back to doing groundbreaking field work on Mars. These spacecraft are amazing," said Alan Stern, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

Scientists model cornucopia of Earth-sized planets

NASA NEWS RELEASE
Posted: September 24, 2007

In the Star Wars movies fictional planets are covered with forests, oceans, deserts, and volcanoes. But new models from a team of MIT, NASA, and Carnegie scientists begin to describe an even wider range of Earth-size planets that astronomers might actually be able to find in the near future.

A short break from gravity

LOLCTHULHU

There are LOLCATS and there's "I Can Haz Cheeseburger"; make mine a little more "squiddy". This is one for Iggy and the Pit Thing.

Hook in the Book

"From experience, Lummox recognized this cycle as necessary and inevitable; nevertheless the immediate prospect was excruciatingly boring. He lumbered listlessly around the back yard of the Stuart home, looking for anything--a grasshopper, a robin, anything at all that might be worth looking at. He watched a hill of ants for a while. They seemed to be moving house; an endless chain was dragging little white grubs in one direction while a countermarching line returned for more grubs. This killed a half hour.
Growing tired of ants, he moved away toward his own house. His number-seven foot came down on the ant hill and crushed it, but the fact did not come to his attention. His own house was just big enough for him to back into it and was the end building of a row of decreasing size; the one at the far end would have made a suitable doghouse for a chihuahua."

Robert A. Heinlein
The Star Beast

Last Word

The Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity are still going strong. The program was originally slated for three months; three and a half years of exploration by the two have vastly expanded the knowledge base expected. Sometimes, the right things just happen! It seems the more we learn, the stranger our dreams. SF has changed over the years, often reflecting the knowledge we have now. For better or worse? It's hars to say that definitively. Keep reading--there's more to come!
