Precursor

Spring has (officially) sprung! And, yet, many of us are still in the midst of winter cold weather. The winter season seemed to start early this year and just a week or two ago snow storms raged thru the east and north regions. Temperatures are nothing like the seasonal norms. Many of us observed “the groundhog lied”. The great debate rages on; are we truly victims of global warming

Cory Doctorow does “a bunch of things: I’m an activist, a writer, a blogger, a public speaker, and a technology person.” He’s recently published an anthology: “OVERCLOCKED: Stories of the Future Present”. Lots of great information on his website: http://www.craphound.com/.

A dead star seen snacking on shredded asteroid

SPITZER SCIENCE CENTER NEWS RELEASE
Posted: April 1, 2007
For the last two years, astronomers have suspected that a nearby white dwarf star was "snacking" on a shredded asteroid. Now, an analysis of chemical "crumbs" in the star's atmosphere has confirmed this suspicion. "This is a really fascinating system, that could offer clues to what our solar system may look like in approximately five billion years when our Sun becomes a white dwarf," a scientist says.

Planets found thriving around stellar twins

NASA/JPL NEWS RELEASE
Posted: March 31, 2007
The double sunset that Luke Skywalker gazed upon in the film "Star Wars" might not be a fantasy. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has observed that planetary systems are at least as abundant in twin-star systems as they are in those, like our own, with only one star. Sunsets on some of those worlds would resemble the ones on Luke Skywalker's planet, Tatooine, where two fiery balls dip below the horizon one by one.

A short break from gravity

overheard in the O*W*C chatroom one night:

once upon a midnight dreary...
while i pondered funk and bleary...
punk being "oh so cheery"

Once, when I woke up in the morning, the image staring back at me from the mirror was a member of the opposite sex. Me, but of the opposite sex.
I was still the same sex, but the image in the mirror wasn't.
i felt i could reach out and actually take my "image" by the hand as i reached toward the mirror,
the figure in the mirror actually reached through and as i stepped toward my image in the mirror, it drew me right through it!
As we stood facing each other, my opposite gave me a little wave goodbye, then jumped back through the mirror.
“does that leave me on the wrong side of the mirror,” i wondered?
“What is wrong side and what is right?" a voice asked behind me.
i jumped nearly a foot in the air, and spun about to ask “who said that?”
I looked into the mirror. A woman stared back at me. I about jumped out of my skin, how did she get in there? She’s mimeing my every move. Wait a minute; she's me. I grabbed the phone.
“meline what the heck did you give me? I'm having transvestite fantasys The potion was supposed to show my true love”
a man's voice answered “whoa, wait a minute...” and then the connection broke “hell,” i thought, “i'm going to have to get over there, and QUICK!
but how?”... finally looking about me. the room bore no resemblance to the room i had left. i could barely discern what might be a door to the left of the mirror i had been drawn through"
So, the main character starts searching thru the drawers in the dresser and find that they are full of sex toys - vibrators, dildos, whips, leather bras, etc. "Boy, am I gonna have fun!!"
While, on the other side of the mirror, the female characters finds many different assasination weapon, as well many passports, disguises and the plan to kill a high government official

you take it from there...

Hook in the Book

The Assiti would be exterminated, eighty-five million years later, by the Fta Tei. Ironically, the Fta Tei were a collateral branch of one of the human races multitude of descendant species. Their motive, however, was not revenge. The Fta Tei knew nothing of their origins on a distant planet once called Earth, much less a minor disaster which had occurred there. The Fta Tei exterminated the Assiti simply because, after many stern warnings, they persisted in practicing their dangerous and irresponsible art.

Last Word

Looking out my window, just now, I’m seeing a gray, overcast day. It’s early, yet. In California, we’ve had a very dry year, and we’re expecting a long “fire” season. Still, “April showers bring May flowers”. I know it’s cliche, but lately, even the weather just doesn’t seem to match the mood. It’s going to be warm this afternoon, and clear skies. Reminds me there’s always something new to be learned, even if “There’s always a boom”
