Date: September 2005
Issue No. 22

Precursor

Now that we have gone through the exhilaration and sleeplessness of WorldCon and NASFIC this year, we are appropriately depleted in pocketbook and spirit. Where does this leave us, spunky Science Fiction Fans? Everything seems to grind to halt. Winter is just round the corner, drab and gray. But...there is inevitably the next time for us old hands,and for the neophytes, there is L.A.con IV: the 64th World Science Fiction Convention. See you all there!

Movie and TV Buzz

Alba is "Awake" - The Weinstein Co. and GreeneStreet Films have signed Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four, Sin City) and Hayden Christensen (Star Wars prequels) to star in psychological thriller Awake. But the real question is will she get naked or close to it like in this month's Into the Blue?

TV Guide's Ausiello has confirmed internet rumors that ER star Goran Visnjic is one of the contenders for the role of 007 in Casino Royale, the 21st James Bond film which Sony is planning on releasing October 19, 2006.

Freed Dried Movies Dot Com has learned that Topher Grace of That 70s Show will play the immortal VENOM in Sam Raimi's third Spiderman adaptation. It was told a few months back that "someone" has snagged the rights to the character of Venom off of New Line Cinema and it was reported a few days ago that Grace had been "bulking up"- so we decided it was time to put the pressure on. So there you have it VENOM! Now as for the other two stars listed above we've been told that Thomas Haden Church will in fact play SANDMAN and that James Franco will play HOBGOBLIN and not the Green Goblin II (like in the comics).

A limerick about Edmund Halley

From the public, his discovery brought cheers.
From his wife, it drew nothing but torrents of tears.
"For you see," said Ms. Halley,
"He used to come daily;
Now he comes once every 70 years!"

~~~ T he Hook in the Book ~~~
THE PRINCE WAS DEAD.
Since the king was not, no unseemly rejoicing dared show in the faces of the men atop the castle gate. Merely, Ingrey thought, a furtive relief. Even that was extinguished as they watched Ingrey's troop of riders clatter under the gate's vaulting into the narrow courtyard. They recognized who he was--and, therefore, who must have sent him.
Ingrey's sweat grew clammy under his leather jerkin in the damp dullness of the autumn morning. The chill seemed cupped within the cobbled yard, funneled down by the whitewashed walls. The lightly armed courier bearing the news had raced from the prince's hunting seat here at Boar's Head Castle to the hallow king's hall at Easthome in just two days. Ingrey and his men, though more heavily equipped, had made the return journey in scarcely more time. As a castle groom scurried to take his horse's bridle, Ingrey swung down and straightened his scabbard, fingers lingering only briefly on the reassuring coolness of his sword hilt.
THE HALLOWED HUNT by Lois McMaster Bujold
Last Word
"In spite of the opinions of certain narrow-minded people, who would shut up the human race upon this globe, as within some magic circle which it must never outstep, we shall one day travel to the moon, the planets, and the stars, with the same facility, rapidity, and certainty as we now make the voyage from Liverpool to New York."
Jules Verne, From the Earth to the Moon, 1865
