Issue No. 48
A leap year (or intercalary year) is a year containing one or more extra days (or, in case of lunisolar calendars, an extra month) in order to keep the calendar year synchronised with the astronomical or seasonal year. For example, February would have 29 days in a leap year instead of the usual 28. Seasons and astronomical events do not repeat at an exact number of full days, so a calendar which had the same number of days in each year would over time drift with respect to the event it was supposed to track. By occasionally inserting (or intercalating) an additional day or month into the year, the drift can be corrected. A year which is not a leap year is called a common year.

Space leaders work to replace lunar base with manned asteroid missions
PUBLISHED IN AVIATION WEEK & SPACE TECHNOLOGY
Posted: January 18, 2008
BY CRAIG COVAULT
Some of the most influential leaders of the space community are quietly working to offer the next U.S. president an alternative to President Bush's "vision for space exploration"--one that would delete a lunar base and move instead toward manned missions to asteroids along with a renewed emphasis on Earth environmental spacecraft.

The violent lives of galaxies: Caught in dark matter web
SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE NEWS RELEASE
Posted: January 20, 2008
Astronomers are using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to dissect one of the largest structures in the universe as part of a quest to understand the violent lives of galaxies. Hubble is providing indirect evidence of unseen dark matter tugging on galaxies in the crowded, rough-and-tumble environment of a massive supercluster of hundreds of galaxies.
Unusual supernovae may reveal black holes
UC-SANTA CRUZ NEWS RELEASE
Posted: January 29, 2008
A strange and violent fate awaits a white dwarf star that wanders too close to a moderately massive black hole. According to a new study, the black hole's gravitational pull on the white dwarf would cause tidal forces sufficient to disrupt the stellar remnant and reignite nuclear burning in it, giving rise to a supernova explosion with an unusual appearance. Observations of such supernovae could confirm the existence of intermediate-mass black holes, currently the subject of much debate among astronomers.

Hook in the Book
"Lately, Julia had been working very long hours. Most nights she didn't get home until the children were asleep. Xymos Technology, the company she worked for, was trying to raise another round of venture capital--twenty million dollars--and there was a lot of pressure. Especially since Xymos was developing technology in what the company called "molecular manufacturing," but which most people called nanotechnology. Nano wasn't popular with the VCs--the venture capitalists--these days. Too many VCs had been burned in the last ten years with products that were supposedly just around the corner, but then never made it out of the lab. The VCs considered nano to be all promise, no products."
So, what have YOU planned on doing this "leap day"? As technical as the wikipedia discussion of leap year goes, I still like to consider the 29th day of February as an extra 24 hours to celebrate the life continues...
2008.02.29 is on a Friday, this year. As luck would have it, I'll be heading to Condor XV that day. My "extra day" begins a long weekend with SF and FN book sellers and artists. The con theme, this year, is "Death and Beyond". Does that fit with my "celebration"? Could be,,,I generally believe opposites can define each other. In any case, I do plan on enjoying the weekend's panels, costumes and the art gallery. As always...
