Precursor

Scientists generally seem to seek out *closed systems.* Closed systems are thought to be controllable, predictable, and stable. Newtonian Physics was deemed such a system. Then along came Einstein and relativity, but Einstein was still seeking-- a Unified Field Theory. There followed Quantum Mechanics, Chaos Theory, and String and Superstring Theory, for example. What if there were something else to underlie all of these and tie them all together?  Science itself seems stubbornly open-ended. Scientists, and we too, need to be and remain stubbornly open-minded.

Leaving money for the dead

A Brooklyn lawyer, a used car salesman and a banker were gathered by a coffin containing the body of an old friend. In his grief, one of the three said, "In my family, we have a custom of giving the dead some money, so they'll have something to spend over there."

They all agreed that this was appropriate. The banker dropped a hundred dollar bill into the casket, and the car salesman did the same. The lawyer took out the bills and wrote a check for $300.

~~~ T he Hook in the Book  ~~~
I saw Byzantium in a dream, and knew that I would die there. That vast city seemed to me a living thing: a great golden lion, or a crested serpent coiled upon a rock, beautiful and deadly. With trembling steps I walked alone to embrace the beast, fear turning my bones to water. I heard no sound save the beating of my own heart and the slow, hissing breath of the creature. As I drew near, the half-lidded eye opened, and the beast awoke. The fearful head rose; the mouth gaped open. A sound like the howl of wind across a winter sky tore the heavens and shook the earth, and a blast of foul breath struck me, withering the very flesh.
Last Word
"In my considered opinion, the profit to be made by permanent settlement in space is nothing less than the survival of industrial civilization, and therefore the survival of nearly the entire human race, along with such amenities as peace, freedom, enough to eat, and the chance to reach a high age in good health."
Poul Anderson in Galileo, 1979
