{"id":1490,"date":"2008-12-04T07:55:59","date_gmt":"2008-12-04T11:55:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/other-worlds-cafe.com\/news\/blog\/?p=1490"},"modified":"2008-12-02T15:06:01","modified_gmt":"2008-12-02T19:06:01","slug":"sapporo-to-debut-space-beer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/other-worlds-cafe.com\/news\/blog\/?p=1490","title":{"rendered":"Sapporo to Debut &#8220;Space Beer&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the few snippets of <I>Lost in Space<\/I> I ever managed to watch without losing consciousness involved June Lockhart serving various dishes, all prefixed with &#8220;space.&#8221;  She presented &#8220;space soup,&#8221; and &#8220;space bread,&#8221; and &#8220;space potatoes&#8221; and it was right about then that I understood why <I>Star Trek<\/I> had such a hard time getting picked up by a network.<\/p>\n<p>But I digress.<\/p>\n<p>Japanese beer giant Sapporo has just launched (har!) a beer brewed from a third generation of barley grains that spent five months on the International Space Station in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists say that they haven&#8217;t found any genetic differences at all between this barley and its Earthbound relatives, so the beer will be exactly like regular beer except for the enormous hype.  I&#8217;m also not sure what&#8217;s stopping beer makers from claiming that any ol&#8217; beer is brewed from the space barley.
