“Star Wars Weekends” Posters

SW Weekend

Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park in Florida has an annual event celebrating the Star Wars movies.

They’ve also created a series of “Backstage” posters to promote awareness of the event amongst employees. These aren’t generally seen by the public, but My Modern Metropolis has the whole set.

The Abridged Star Trek

I saw the new Star Trek reboot and loved it despite plot holes that you could throw a dog through. bbot has done a deeply wonderful coffee-out-the-nose job of paring the script down to its essentials. Including all the plot holes.

JENNIFER MORRISON
I’m fucking giving birth, you fucker. Where the fuck are you?

CHRIS HEMSWORTH
Be right there, honey. By the way, what should we name our son?

JENNIFER MORRISON
     How about Tiberius?

CHRIS HEMSWORTH
     Pish, Tiberius sucks.

TREKKIES
     WHAT

(It should go without saying that this is one long spoiler, so don’t read it if you haven’t seen the movie. Go see the movie, then come back and read this. Without drinking a beverage at the same time.)

Tree Lobsters!

Tree Lobsters“The World’s Best Arboreal Seafood Webcomic.”

They’re lobsters in trees.

They make a lot of jokes about pop culture and science fiction.

I may be in love.

The King Will Haunt Your Nightmares

I like the fact that at some point Burger King realized that its giant plastic-headed mascot was creepy as hell and instead of switching to something less horrifying decided to just run with it.

Last December they launched a new men’s fragrance which featured “a hint of flame-broiled meat,” and followed it up with a promotional Web site. (Go there, and click. Click a few more times. See?)

Now they’re promoting their Star Trek movie tie-in glasses with a series of ads demonstrating the appropriate way to fend off a Burger Klingon intent on stealing your stuff.

The rest are here.

Now just try and get to sleep tonight.

Campaigning: Ur Doin It…Pretty Well, Akshully

Tevis Cartoon

We mentioned Sean Tevis, the “Candidate from the Internet” previously. He lost the election (although it was close, which is still quite a feat considering that he was a complete unknown running against a career politician).

He’s begun campaigning for another run in 2010, and has come up with an interesting way to let donors get involved. He’s meeting with as many senators as possible, asking them to help accomplish the goals he wanted to achieve, and he gives each senator he meets a commemorative T-shirt printed with donor names. Even better:

As you may know, Stephen Colbert was recently robbed of his chance to get a module of the international space station named after him. While I encourage Mr. Colbert to just change his name to ‘Tranquility’ (the name NASA chose) and claim victory – it doesn’t seem likely. Mr. Colbert needs some name-recognition love from elsewhere.

Therefore, if we manage to get all 50 politician’s shirts sponsored by June 1st, I will officially name my car “The Spirit of Colbert” in big letters across the sides. Unless, of course, I get a cease and desist letter from Comedy Central in which case I’ll name it “Tranquility”.

I like him.

Our Jewelry, Ourselves

EpiskinArtist Marta Lwin has protoyped a biological jewelry she’s calling “epiSkin.”

Cultured in a lab, this biological jewelry is made of epithelia cells which grow to create an artificial skin. The cells are grown into custom designed forms, controlled by the artist. The cells are incubated for a period of time, following which they are stained with a custom dye.

I suppose this would be an interesting and highly-personalized gift item,* but on the Cool/Creepy spectrum I think it falls pretty squarely into “Creepy.”

SF-Inspired Crafts

BanthaMy recent tribble tutorial inspired me to dig out some of the other SF craft links that I hoard like a cybernetic pack rat. Share and enjoy.

Hitch-Hiker’s Guide Kindle Case – A case with large, friendly letters that say, “Don’t Panic.”

Mourning Monument Costume – A wonderful con hall costume inspired by the Doctor Who episode “Blink.”

Han Solo Said it Best – Great cross-stitch design.

Evil Mad Scientist Labs is a trove of projects, including the Missile Command Skirt, Cylon Jack-o-Lantern, and Edible Circuit Boards

Sock Monkey Roundup – All kinds of neat sock creations over at ThreadBanger. I especially like the sock skeleton and the sock monkey Hindu goddess.

Star Wars Crafts – I had no idea that starwars.com had a whole section devoted to things like Dark Maul Easter eggs and stuffed Banthas.

Coraline Gloves – A life-size replica of the gloves that Coraline covets in the film.

Cthulhu Roundup – All kinds of crafts featuring our favorite Old One.

Doctor Who Scarf – Instructions for knitting a scarf similar to the one worn by the Fourth Doctor.

Lady Artisan’s Apron – Neat steampunk apron/costume. I especially love the fake “band” patches.

Making Vinegar – with…Science!

Trilobite Cookies – Instructions for making little chocolatey fossilized arthropods using one of those gun-shaped cookie press things.

Crocheted Ray Gun – This fiber artist makes all kinds of awesome, offbeat crocheted items, then writes amusing posts about them.

Star Trek-Inspired Crafts – Craftster has a bunch of ‘em.

District 9

io9 recently posted this trailer of Neill Blomkamp’s mockumentary District 9, which focuses on the intolerance humans display to an alien race that happens to be living here on Earth.

It looks interesting, and they’re making all kinds of excited noises about how thought-provoking the film will be, but…hasn’t this film been made already, under the title Alien Nation?

Cue the “Aporkalypse” Jokes

Google Maps meets Captain Trips:
(Takes a few seconds to fully load)

(via Cognitive Dissident)

Swine Flu PSAs from 1976:
(The second ad is fairly good illustration of how infection spreads…assuming everybody is pawing each other all the time. Also the guy with the moustache scares me.)

(via BoingBoing)

Outbreak Movie Trailer:

(io9 has this and 10 other “Visions of Life After the Great Epidemic.”)

Fortunately, there’s now an iPhone app that will let you track the flu’s progress.

…what?

ShatnerquakeEvery so often you run into something that exists in its own little pocket of weirdness, so far from every other weird thing that you can’t imagine what train of thought would have led to it. Shatnerquake is such a thing.

It’s the first ShatnerCon with William Shatner as the guest of honor! But after a failed terrorist attack by Campbellians, a crazy terrorist cult that worships Bruce Campbell, all of the characters ever played by William Shatner are suddenly sucked into our world. Their mission: hunt down and destroy the real William Shatner.

Featuring: Captain Kirk, TJ Hooker, Denny Crane, Rescue 911 Shatner, Singer Shatner, Shakespearean Shatner, Twilight Zone Shatner, Cartoon Kirk, Esperanto Shatner, Priceline Shatner, SNL Shatner, and – of course – William Shatner!

I…there’s nothing to say. No possible exaggeration would top reality.
